Sussex police report that a couple in Sompting have been defrauded out of several thousand pounds in a version of the Courier Fraud scam. They have issued an e-fit picture of one of the perpetrators.
This is a particularly nasty type of fraud that often targets vulnerable people.
Sadly, in this day and age it is very important to verify the identity of anyone who telephones you or approaches you in person claiming to be acting in an official capacity.
Any genuine official who approaches you in public or at your door will be able to show you identification. On the telephone, you should always ring the calling company back on their official number from another phone and on their published number (rather than any number the caller gives you). You can find their official number on their website or in the phone directory.
More details of how to avoid becoming a victim of this type of crime can be found in my recent post about Courier Fraud.
