Council Tax Refund Scam

Sussex Police warn that people have been targeted by a scam in which they are told they were placed in the wrong council tax band and are owed a refund.

They are then informed they need to pay a fee and are asked for credit/debit card details.

Councils will not call you asking for personal data or credit card numbers.  If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the council and wish to check whether it is genuine, it is sensible to take the name of the caller, end the call and ring your council on their published number from another phone (or 10 minutes later to make sure the caller is not still on the line).  Here are the links to contact the East Sussex Councils and West Sussex Councils.

If you believe you have received a call of this nature from a scammer, email Sussex Police or call the police on 101.

More details can be found on the Sussex Police website.
